Value Continuum: Compassionate Conversations

In part two of a series, Yvonne D Dowie shares insight into how networks can lead the way in having Compassionate Conversations - one of the crucial elements in the Value Continuum.


Compassionate Conversations are a meaningful constructive verbal exchanges that take place on an adult to adult basis. They are an opportunity to bridge divides and mend relationships, by using basic conflict resolution skills, such as,

  • Active listening

  • Reframing

  • Acknowledging ones and others emotions

It's important for networks to master the art of holding compassionate conversations and below are some guiding steps to support you:

Check Your Intention:

  • What is the purpose of the conversation

  • Have clarity in terms of what you want to discuss

  • Visualize the intended outcome

Be Self Compassionate:

  • Have a positive internal dialogue with yourself

  • Be kind to yourself

  • Extend that kindness to others

Make Time to Listen:

  • Ensure enough space has been created to talk

  • Listen actively to what you hear

  • Reframe what you’ve heard to check understanding

Increase Your Distress Tolerance

  • This links back to one’s Emotional Intelligence

  • Try to avoid taking on others emotions

  • Check you have the resilience to handle/deal with others emotional response, as well as your own

Be An Intentional Bystander

  • Show positive concern for others

  • Actually hear the response

  • Respond appropriately to explore a resolution
